The SBB RABe 520 is an electric articulated multiple unit of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), which corresponds to the type Stadler GTW 2/8 .

features

The drive module in the middle of the car develops an output of 760 kW, with which a maximum speed of 115 km / h can be achieved. The differences to the standard version include a larger transport capacity, a narrower car body to gain more distance from the road , and twice the number of doors. It is the first GTW to be equipped with the new air-sprung Stadler bogies. However, the narrow envelope space under the narrow car bodies leads to a tough running of the car. The narrow seats in the narrow vehicles and the short seat divider of only 1650 mm in the first class also contribute to the moderate travel comfort.

Compared to other SBB vehicles, the Seetal GTW also deviate from the standard that the entrances are designed at 55 cm platform height. The entry height is only 35 cm and is adapted for platforms as they occur on the main route in the Seetal .

Areas of application

The RABe 520 were specially procured for the Seetalbahn ( Lenzburg - Lucerne ), but also run on other SBB routes that connect from Lenzburg or Lucerne. Since the timetable change on December 11, 2016, you can find them on the following routes:

  • Lucerne – Lenzburg ( S9 )
  • Luzern – Brunnen ( S3 ) (isolated)
  • Lucerne-Hochdorf ( S99 ) (additional trains)
  • Lenzburg – Zofingen ( S28 ) (isolated)

The RABe 520 was also used on the Aarau - Wettingen route until the route was partially closed due to the timetable change on December 12, 2004 .

modernization

The SBB plan to subject the RABe 520 to a major overhaul after half of its useful life . This is to be carried out by 2021. It is u. a. a corrosion treatment was carried out on the box, the customer information system was replaced and a new paintwork was carried out. In addition, the entrance to one of the two doors in the middle section of the car is increased to 55 cm so that wheelchairs can also get on at standard locks without assistance. For this purpose, the two entrances inside the car are connected by a ramp. The modernization of the RABe 520 008 as a prototype began in April 2018 and the first renewed vehicle has been in operation since January 2019.
