Tellbus Altdorf – Lucerne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tellbus Altdorf – Lucerne ( referred to as route 60.093 in the official timetable ) is an express bus route that connects the Swiss canton capital Altdorf UR and Lucerne via the A2 motorway. The offer, which is mainly aimed at commuters, is operated by the concession holder Auto AG Uri in cooperation with the Lucerne transport company. There is no surcharge for the Tellbus, the same tariff applies as on the Altdorf – Lucerne railway line . Similar to the Tellbus, the Winkelriedbus was introduced on the Altdorf– Stans route at the end of 2015 .

history

The Tellbus was created because the existing public transport connection Altdorf - Flüelen - Lucerne is unattractive due to its duration. The travel time by bus and train is between 62 and 83 minutes, depending on the connection, and around 35 minutes by car. This is due to two factors: firstly, the railway line includes a detour around the Rigi and secondly, travelers from the Altdorf center must first take the bus to Flüelen and change there to the train. The Tellbus, which was in operation for the first time on September 27, 2006, combats these two problems with a direct connection from the Altdorf village center to Lucerne station through the Seelisberg tunnel . The scheduled travel time is only 40 to 43 minutes. Initially, the offer was aimed almost exclusively at commuters, as the connections were only available on weekdays and only in the morning and evening.

In 2010, the two morning and two evening connections per direction were supplemented by two afternoon courses per direction. In the years that followed, the number of connections was further increased, including lunchtime courses. Since 2012 there has been a connection in the morning and in the evening on Saturday and since 2016 there has also been a connection at noon.

Until 2017, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) held the concession for the line. However, the SBB never operated the line themselves, but obliged the local bus companies, Auto AG Uri (AAGU) and Verkehrsbetriebe Luzern (VBL) to do so . For the 2018 timetable year, SBB handed over the license to AAGU, which will continue to operate the Tellbus in cooperation with VBL.

offer

Today (as of 2019) the Tellbus offer includes many times the original connections. During the week, passengers have 13, on Saturdays 3 and on Sundays 2 connections in each direction. The target group of the express bus connection no longer exclusively includes commuters, but also more and more tourists and day-trippers. There are also connections to trains in Lucerne, especially to Basel , Bern and Geneva .

The demand for the offer is so high that since January 2007 some courses have had to run with additional buses. The connection at 7:05 a.m. from Altdorf is so busy that it usually has to run three times.

Stops

A Tellbus from the Lucerne transport company is waiting for its next use at the Altdorf Dätwyler AG bus stop .

The Tellbus runs between the four stops Altdorf Telldenkmal , Flüelen Eggberge Talstation , Luzern Eichhof and Luzern Bahnhof . It is not possible to use the Tellbus only on the Altdorf-Flüelen route or within the city of Lucerne.

The Tellbus operated at Lucerne train station from bus edge Z until December 2016. However, due to the introduction of double articulated buses on trolleybus line 2 ( RBus concept ), the almost 25 meter long vehicles required a longer stop edge. Since then, the Tellbuses have been using the bus edge W.

Buses that go in the opposite direction after arriving in Altdorf have to leave the bus stop due to a lack of space in the center of the village and take a waiting position at the Altdorf Dätwyler AG bus stop . About five minutes before departure, the buses move to their departure position on the opposite side of the street from the arrival stop. The Uri cantonal railway station in Altdorf is expected to go into operation in 2021 , which is why Auto AG Uri will rearrange its bus and post bus network in a star shape around the station. The Tellbus is also affected: He is the new bus station west of Canton station on the equally new A2 - half connection drive Altdorf south on the highway and therefore no longer serve the Altdorfer village directly.

The idea of providing the Tellbus with an intermediate stop in Nidwalden was rejected by the operators, as the journey time would be considerably longer due to the detour. In order to still be able to offer a direct connection to the people of Nidwalden and Uri, the Winkelriedbus was launched by the two cantons.

vehicles

Today, the range is usually covered by two double-decker Setra S 431 DTs , which were purchased for this connection. Standard coaches are also available for additional courses and in the event of cancellations . In exceptional cases, the Lucerne public transport company uses articulated diesel buses or normal buses from their fleet of buses.

Originally, in 2006 the Lucerne public transport company procured a three-axle Volvo 9700 touring coach for the operation of the Tellbus , which a little later was supplemented by a two-axle vehicle of the same type due to capacity bottlenecks . As early as the fourth quarter of 2007, demand on the Tellbus Altdorf – Lucerne was so high that rented double-decker vehicles had to be used or courses had to be taken several times. From March 2009, the Lucerne public transport company had its own double-decker vehicle; the double-decker from Auto AG Uri was put into operation in March 2010.
