The Mendrisio – Varese line is an international line that - as part of the Ticino and Lombardy S-Bahn systems - connects Switzerland and Italy .

history

Share over 100 francs in SA per la Ferrovia Mendrisio-Stabio Confine from February 1, 1925

The section from Mendrisio to Stabio was put into operation in 1926 as the Swiss part of the international Valmorea Railway . As early as 1928, however, cross-border traffic was discontinued due to insufficient profitability and the route was only used for local freight traffic to the industrial and commercial enterprises around Stabio. In 1993 the border crossing was reopened, the Italian part was gradually reconstructed and run as a museum train by the Club del San Gottardo (today the museum trains run to Malnate , the extension to Castiglione Olona is planned ).

The timetable change in December 2014, the section from Mendrisio to Stabio thanks to the construction of the new was railway Mendrisio-Varese in passenger put back into operation.

On the Italian side, there is a railway line from Gallarate to Varese , which is connected to a railway line from Varese to Porto Ceresio that has been out of service since 2009, expanded in recent years and reopened in full on January 7, 2018. Between the Arcisate station on this route and the Stabio station, a new line was built that opened on December 22nd, 2017 - several years later than the original plan. Scheduled traffic began on January 7, 2018.

Infrastructure

The approximately five kilometer long new line branches off the existing line shortly after Stabio, crosses the state border immediately before the next stop, Cantello Gaggiolo , from which the line runs on two tracks until shortly before Varese . In addition to the stops , this change from double to single track is another operating point on the line. The second is to the east of the Arcisate stop , where the route to Porto Ceresio branches off. Both the new and the upgraded route have a tunnel each .

On the Swiss side, the trains run on 15,000 volts AC at 16 2/3 Hertz , on the Italian side under 3000 volts DC . The system change point is located east of the Cantello Gaggiolo stop and the border on Swiss territory.

business

The operation is remote-controlled on the Swiss side by Pollegio and on the Italian side by Milano Greco Pirelli . The train service is carried out by TILO (Treni Regionali Ticino Lombardia), a joint subsidiary of the Swiss Federal Railways and Trenord . The trains run every half hour from Monday to Friday between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m., and every hour in the evenings and on weekends. There is only freight traffic on the Swiss side. The vehicles used are dual-system-capable Stadler Flirt railcars .
