Ludwig Georg Winter (born January 18, 1778 in Elzach -Prechtal; † March 27, 1838 in Karlsruhe ) was a politician from Baden .

Life

In 1815 he joined the Baden Ministry of the Interior as Ministerialrat . In 1830 he became Minister of the Interior of the Grand Duchy, and from 1833 to 1838 he headed the affairs of state as Minister of State.

He was the driving force behind the early liberal economic and political reforms in Baden, which qualified the country as a “model country” of the political order in Germany in the early 19th century. These include the freedom of trade , the public of the jury , the abolition of the tithe (1822) as well as the Baden community code and the laws on freedom of the press (1831). He campaigned for the promotion of the infrastructure , such as the correction of the Rhine , the expansion of the Mannheim harbor and the road network and the construction of the railway network .

In 1830, Ludwig Georg Winter was awarded the Grand Cross of the Zähringer Lion Order .

Winter died of a stroke on March 27, 1838 . The day before he had solemnly closed the extraordinary state parliament at which the construction of the Baden main line had been decided.

In 1855 a memorial by Franz Xaver Reich (figure) and Friedrich Theodor Fischer (base) was erected for winter on Ettlinger-Tor-Platz (at that time the main train station) . It has been in the Beiertheim wood since 1964.

Marriage and offspring

Winter was the brother-in-law of the liberal Baden Interior Minister Karl Friedrich Nebenius , with whom he worked closely in politics. He married Nebenius' sister Adelheid Franziska Wilhelmine Nebenius (born August 24, 1798 in Malsberg; † 1870 in Karlsruhe). Both had a daughter, Adelheid, who married General Götz.
