Vincenz Freiherr von Augustin (born March 27, 1780 in Pest , † March 6, 1859 in Vienna ) was an Austrian field warrior .

Life

family

Vincenz von Augustin was born in Pest on March 27, 1780 . His parents were the captain Jakob Augustin († 1795) and his wife Christine, née von Spazek.

Military background

He joined the Austrian army in 1794, was on the quartermaster's staff of Archduke Karl in 1809 and, from 1813, on the staff of Field Marshal Schwarzenberg . He successfully led the pioneering conquest of Friedrichsort under Bernadotte .

After carefully studying the English Congreve rockets , named after their inventor William Congreve , he introduced this new weapon into the Austrian army. In 1814 Augustin became head of the war rocket establishment and in 1817 the commander of the missile corps in Wiener Neustadt, which was newly established in the Austrian artillery .

In 1822 he was raised to the rank of baron , in 1831 promoted to major general and in 1838 to field marshal lieutenant. From 1848 privy councilor and 1849 field master craftsman and general artillery director. After the revolution of 1848 Augustin designed the design for the k. k. Artillery arsenal , where he was subsequently also given construction management.

Augustine not only introduced rocket weapons in the Austrian army, he also improved handguns . On the basis of percussion ignition, percussion rifles were first introduced into the Hanoverian army in 1825 . Since 1830 attempts have been made in Austria with it, but it was not until 1841 that an improved percussion rifle invented by Augustin was introduced to the entire army.

Marriages and offspring

Vincenz von Augustin was buried in the St. Barbara cemetery in Linz. He was married twice. On February 1, 1807, he married Therese von Haller (1784-1840). The couple had seven children, including Lieutenant Field Marshal Ferdinand Vincenz von Augustin (1807–1861). After the death of his first wife, he married Therese Rößler (1813–1891) on March 21, 1842 and had three other children with her, including Major General August von Augustin (* 1843).

Museum reception

In the Viennese Army History Museum , Augustin honors Vincenz as the “builder” of the arsenal .
