Adolphus Peter Elkin

Adolphus Peter Elkin (born March 27, 1891 in West Maitland , New South Wales , Australia , † July 9, 1979 in Sydney ) was an Australian ethnologist , anthropologist and linguist .

Originally an Anglican clergyman, he became a professor of anthropology at the University of Sydney and made a contribution to research into the culture of the Australian Aborigines , especially their totemism . His main work is his book The Australian Aborigines: How to Understand Them , which has been published in many editions since 1938 . He also edited the anthropological journal Oceania . He also wrote a history of the Diocese of Newcastle .
