Prudhoe Bay , German Prudhoe-Bai , is a census-designated place (CDP) in the North Slope Borough in the state of Alaska in the United States . It is the starting point of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline leading across Alaska to the ice-free port of Valdez .

Prudhoe Bay is home to the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field, the largest oil deposit in the United States with an original volume of 25 billion barrels , which was discovered in 1968. The field reached its peak oil production in 1988 with a production of almost 2 million barrels per day . Since then, production has been on the decline. In 2006 the remaining reserves were estimated at at least 2 billion barrels, 11 billion barrels were already mined between 1977 and 2005.

After Prudhoe Bay leads from Fairbanks the 666 km long and up to the height of 1415 m rising Dalton Highway , which was closed to private traffic for a long time.

In December 2018, a test well - Hydrate 01 Stratigraphic Test Well - took samples of methane hydrate on land near the coastal road while maintaining the geological pressure. After their analyzes, it was published on April 26, 2019 that there is a layer of methane hydrate in the pores of the granular rock at 844 and 700 m depths.

Demographics

At the time of the 2000 census , there was only one household in the city that consisted of a married couple with two sons and one daughter. In addition to this one house, there are only living containers for the employees of the oil production company, most of whom come from other US states or directly from Alaska.
