Nuiqsut is a city in the North Slope Borough in the state of Alaska in the United States .

Nuiqsut is located on the western bank of the Nechelik Channel on the Colville River Delta about 35 miles off the coast of the Beaufort Sea. There is an arctic climate with little rainfall .

history

The area around Nuisqsut was settled by the Inupiat Eskimo tribe . The Colville River Delta was traditionally a popular trading post for the Inupiat, and the area offered good fishing and hunting opportunities . The old Village of Nuiqsut (Itqilippaa) was abandoned in the later 1940s because there was no school in the area. In 1973 the area was repopulated by 27 families from Barrow . In 1973 and 1974 government organizations built a school, houses and other facilities. Goods were brought in from Barrow on tractors and snow machines. In 1975 Nuiqsut was incorporated as a City .

Economy and Infrastructure

Nuiqsut is located in the middle of an extensive oil production area . The oil production are from companies such as ConocoPhillips and BP operated.
