Point Hope is at the tip of a headland at the northwest end of the Lisburne Peninsula on the coast of the Chukchi Sea . The area has an arctic climate. 330 miles northeast of Point Hope is the town of Barrow , the administrative seat of the North Slope Borough .
history
The Point Hope Peninsula is one of the oldest areas in Alaska, which was continuously populated by the semi-nomadic Inupiat . Some settlements on the peninsula have existed for 2500 years. The peninsula offers good access to marine mammals , and the pack ice situation allows safe boat trips into the open sea during the spring whaling season. In 1848 commercial whaling led to an influx of westerners who employed Point Hope residents as fishermen. In the early 1900s, whaling rapidly lost its importance. In 1966, Point Hope was incorporated as a City . In 1962, the residents of the small town successfully fought against the United States Atomic Energy Commission's plan, known as Operation Chariot , to create an artificial seaport in Cape Thompson by detonating a series of atomic bombs .
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) Point Hope had 757 inhabitants on a land area of 16.4 km². The median age was 21.9 years (US national average: 35.3 years). The per capita income (engl. The per capita income ) amounted to US $ 16,641 (national average of USA: US $ 21,587). 14.8% of the population had their income below the poverty line (national average in the USA: 12.4%). 90.6% of the residents of Point Hope are of indigenous descent who live in the nationally recognized Indian reservation Village of Point Hope. The Inupiat Eskimos keep their ancient traditions despite the influence of Western culture. The trade, import and consumption of alcohol in the reserve is not allowed.
Economy and Infrastructure
The city and borough administration offers job opportunities. The residents make masks from whale bones, ivory carvings and Eskimo clothing and feed mainly on seals , whales, caribou , polar bears , birds, fish and berries. There is a school in town. Medical care is provided by the Point Hope Health Clinic, among others. In Point Hope there is a public airfield operated by the state, which guarantees the only year-round accessibility of the area isolated by land. Skiffs , umiaks and snowmobiles are used for local transportation .
