Point Lay is a city in the North Slope Borough in Alaska in the United States .
geography
Point Lay is located south of the mouth of the Kokolik River on the coast of the Chukchi Sea . 300 miles northeast of Point Lay is the town of Barrow , the administrative seat of the North Slope Borough. The area has an arctic climate. The Chukchi Sea is ice-free from June to September.
history
Point Lay is one of the areas on the Arctic coast that were settled by the Inupiat Eskimo tribe . The deeply indented coastline prevented the bowhead whale - whaling , however, is in the area Beluga operated -Fang. Because of the frequent flooding by the Kokolik River, the village was moved south in the late 1970s near the Air Force Distance Early Warning Station .

There is a school and hospital in town, the Point Lay Clinic. In Point Lay there is a public airfield operated by the US Air Force , which guarantees the only year-round accessibility of the area isolated by land.
