Albert "Berten" Van Coile (born March 27, 1900 in Sint-Andries , Bruges , † April 4, 1927 there ) was a Belgian football player . He was a defender , played exclusively for Cercle Bruges and was best known for his untimely death at the age of 27.

Life

Albert Van Coile, born in Bruges in 1900, only played for the local club Cercle in his life. From 1919 he was active in the first team of the club, for which he played 178 games. He was also in an international match against the Netherlands for the Belgian national team in 1926 .

Van Coile gained greater fame through his death in 1927 at the age of only 27: During a tournament in Tourcoing in which he played in the forward position , Van Coile collided with an opposing goalkeeper. Although he suffered no visible injuries from the collision, a tear in his bowel was discovered a day after the incident . A hastily carried out operation turned out to be unsuccessful, Albert Van Coile died on April 4, 1927 in his hometown of Bruges.

His funeral received a lot of media coverage in Belgium . In the summer of 1927, a few months after Van Coile's death, Cercle Bruges won the Belgian championship .
