The Brodsky or Choral Synagogue

The Brodsky Synagogue (Yiddish: Brodsky Shul בראדסקי שול ), also Choral Synagogue , is one of the still used synagogues in Kiev , Ukraine , along with the Podil Synagogue and the Halyzka Synagogue . It was re-inaugurated as a synagogue in 2000.

history

The synagogue was built in the years 1897/98 to plans by Georg grinder in Moorish style built. The construction of the synagogue was financed by the sugar magnate and philanthropist Lasar Brodskyj .

In 1926 the church was confiscated. The building was then used as a club for artists. During the occupation by the Nazi regime, the synagogue was used as a stable for the army horses. Since 1955 it was a puppet theater.

In 1991 Moshe Reuven Azman became rabbi of the Jewish Religious Community Chabad Lubavich and demanded the return of the synagogue to the Jewish community of Kiev, which took place in December 1997. In the 70 years of its conversion, the synagogue's furnishings had suffered severe damage. Its arch and bimah had been knocked out to create a false ceiling. The women's galleries had been converted into offices. A fifteen-month reconstruction program began in January 1999 so that the synagogue could then be used again as such.
