The Halyzka Synagogue ( Ukrainian Галицька синагога ; Yiddish בית יעקב שול Beith Yaakov Shul ) is a synagogue in Kiev , Ukraine . It is located in the Holosiyiv district on Schyljanska Street.

history

The synagogue was built in 1909/10 by the Jewish Prayer Society . In the 1920s it was used by the Beit Ja'akov community . In 1930 it was closed.

It became the canteen of the nearby Transsignal plant . The building was used to make coffee for over 50 years.

In 2001 the building was returned to the Kiev Jewish community. Since then the synagogue has also been used as a socio-cultural center.

Events

In 2004 there was an exhibition “The Architecture of the Shtetl” in the Halyzka Synagogue. On August 7, 2006, in the synagogue, citizens of Kiev met Israeli Knesset MPs who had come to Ukraine. The meeting was part of a joint venture program between the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. The relevance of the Jewish diaspora was emphasized by Michael Nudelman , as a representative of the Kadima party, and by Joseph Shagal, as a representative of the “Israel our home” party.

The Halyzka Synagogue also serves as the center of Jewish and Israeli history and culture in collaboration with the Midrash Tzionit Educational Center . The center is one of the new programs of the Institute of Jewish Studies, which is supported by the Jewish Agency "Sohnut" .

Regular exhibitions on the life of Jewish and Israeli history and culture as well as on the life of the Jewish population of Kiev and Ukraine complete the program. There are four permanent exhibitions: “Jewish History and Culture of Ukraine”, “History and Modern Development of Zionism”, “History and Present of the State of Israel”, and “Judaism - Jewish Faith and Tradition”. Literary seminars are also held.
