Mart Opmann

Mart Opmann (born March 27, 1956 in Surju , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician and businessman.

Life and politics

Mart Opmann attended middle school in Alatskivi and passed his Abitur in 1947 in Tartu, South Estonia . In 1979 he graduated from the State University of Tartu ( Tartu Riiklik Ülikool ) with a degree in business cybernetics .

With the recovery of Estonian independence, Opmann was active in the banking sector and at the same time became politically active. In 1995 he joined the Estonian Coalition Party ( Eesti Koonderakond ). He was initially Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of Estonia in 1991/92. From April 1995 to November 1995 Opmann was Minister of Finance of the Republic of Estonia in the cabinet of Prime Minister Tiit Vähi . He held the same office from November 1995 to March 1997 in the third cabinet of Vähi and from March 1997 to March 1999 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Siimann .

From 1999 to 2002 Opmann was a member of the Saku Town Council near Tallinn. In the summer of 2000, then President Lennart Meri rejected Opmann's appointment as President of the Estonian Central Bank ( Eesti Pank ) and called for a politically independent candidate to be named.

Opmann has been a member of the Estonian People's Union ( Eestimaa Rahvaliit ) since 2002 . From 2003 to 2007 he was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). Since then he has been working as an entrepreneur in Estonia.

Private life

Mart Opmann is married and has two sons.
