Joseph Lowery
Joseph Echols Lowery (born October 6, 1921 in Huntsville , Alabama , † March 27, 2020 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was an American pastor of the United Methodist Church and a pioneer of the American civil rights movement .
Together with Martin Luther King he helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was its chairman from 1977 to 1997. He was married to civil rights activist Evelyn Gibson Lowery .
At the inauguration of US President Barack Obama on January 20, 2009, Joseph Lowery gave the inauguration blessing.
On August 12, 2009, President Barack Obama presented him with the highest civilian honor in the United States, the Medal of Freedom .
