Adelhold

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adelhold also Athelod (us), Adelodus or Adelvoldus (* before 1068; † March 27, 1100 in Braunschweig ) was the first provost known by name of the collegiate church of St. Blaise of Dankwarderode Castle in Braunschweig.

Life

Adelhold is evidently attested as a member of the foundation around the year 1067, when he handed over lands (38½ hooves ) to the "ecclesia Thoncguarderoth" through the margraves Ekbert I. and Ekbert II . This circumstance suggests a closeness to the Brunones , from whose family these counts came. The Church of St. Blaise was dedicated to St. John the Baptist and Blaise . At that time, however, it does not seem to be identical to the aforementioned Ecclesia, but to be its predecessor. Adelhold is also said to have given the monastery more than 50 valuable books. This could have been the basis for the abbey library. A portable altar with valuable relics donated by Adelhold is part of the Braunschweig Guelph Treasure . The provost probably first found his final resting place in the collegiate church ("ecclesia Thoncguarderoth"), he is said to have been exhumed on behalf of Henry the Lion and buried in the central nave of the new collegiate church.

The portable altar

The portable altar of "Adelvoldus" is a square object with the dimensions 7.5 × 21.1 × 21.0 cm. The base plate is covered with sheet copper, while the side panels are made of brown alabaster panels . The cover plate is made of green porphyry . This altar stone is surrounded by a silver border with an inscription. This translates as: "Provost Adelvoldus gave this consecrated stone to St. Blaise."
