Ekbert I. von Meißen (* around 1036 , † January 11, 1068 ) from the Brunonen family was a Saxon count and margrave of Meißen .

Life

He was the son of the Saxon nobleman Liudolf and his wife Gertrud the Elder of Braunschweig , from whom he inherited the Brunon property around Braunschweig . For his East Westphalian county there was a feudal dependency on the Bishop of Hildesheim since 1051 . Ekbert also acquired various Frisian counties under the feudal sovereignty of the Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen. Although closely related to the Salian ruling house, Ekbert participated in the kidnapping of the underage King Heinrich IV in the coup d'état of Kaiserswerth in 1062 . In 1067 Ekbert was enfeoffed with the Mark Meissen.

He was since 1058 married to Irmgard of Turin from the family of arduinici , the widow of Otto of Schweinfurt († 1057) and her sister Adelheid aunt the Empress Bertha (Bertha of Turin), the wife of Henry IV. Was succeeded by his son, Egbert II . , after his childless death in 1090 the Brunonese property fell to his sister Gertrud the Younger of Brunswick .

Ekbert promoted trade in Braunschweig and is believed to be the founder of the local Cyriakus Foundation , which was the family monastery and burial place of the Brunones.
