Clark Ross

Clark Winslow Ross (born March 27, 1957 in Maracaibo ) is a Canadian composer, guitarist and music teacher.

Ross grew up in Venezuela, Peru, the USA and Belgium before moving to Toronto at the age of seventeen to study music at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music . His composition teachers were Samuel Dolin , John Beckwith , Ka Nin Chan and Gustav Ciamaga . He taught at the Royal Conservatory from 1987 to 1990 and then at McMaster University . Since 1992 he has taught composition, counterpoint, harmony, music analysis, electronic music and guitar at Memorial University of Newfoundland .

As a composer, Ross received Young Composer's Awards from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and composition commissions a. a. the CBC , Newfoundland Arts Council and the Labrador Arts Council, and the Canada Council . In 1999 he received the President's Award for Outstanding Research from Memorial University . He was composer in residence at Waterford New Music Week in Ireland in 2003 and guest composer at Wheaton College in Illinois in 2007 . In 2011 he was nominated for Last Dance for the Juno Award for Classical Composer of the Year. Recordings of his compositions were a. a. Recorded by guitarists Daniel Bolshoy and Sylvie Proulx , pianist Kristina Szutor and cellist Vernon Regehr . As a guitarist Ross appears with his own compositions and works by contemporary composers. He is married to the religious scholar Jennifer Porter .
