Wilhelm Heinrich Ackermann
Wilhelm Heinrich Ackermann (born June 25, 1789 in Auerbach / Vogtl. , † March 27, 1848 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German educator. During the Wars of Independence in 1813 he served as a volunteer in the Lützow Freikorps .
Life
Ackermann was the son of a pastor and attended high school in Gotha . In 1807 he began to study theology in Leipzig . At the same time, through the mediation of his uncle Rudolph Ackermann, who lived in London , he became tutor for some young Englishmen. This made him feel called to be a teacher and studied with Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi for two years from 1811 to 1813 .
In 1813 he joined the Lützow Freikorps as a volunteer and took part in all battles of the corps up to the entry into Paris. In the fight on the Göhrde he captured a cannon on September 16, 1813 and was then awarded the Iron Cross . One of his friends was Theodor Körner , who fell on August 26, 1813 and whose grave he and three comrades dug under an oak tree in Wöbbelin .
After the war he resumed teaching in various places, including again at Pestalozzi in Yverdon-les-Bains . In 1819 he came to Frankfurt am Main and in 1820 became a teacher of German and history at the Musterschule , where he stayed until his retirement at the end of 1847.
Ackermann died on March 27, 1848. His grave is in the Frankfurt main cemetery (Gewann E 69) and is an honorary grave . A street and a primary school in Frankfurt-Gallus are named after Ackermann .
