Seymour Wilson "Budd" Schulberg (born March 27, 1914 in New York City , † August 5, 2009 in Westhampton Beach, Suffolk County , Long Island ) was an American writer and screenwriter .

Life

Budd Schulberg was born into a film family. His father BP Schulberg was a pioneer in Hollywood as a film producer , and his younger brother Stuart Schulberg was also a screenwriter and film producer. He produced films with Louis B. Mayer and was head of Paramount Pictures alongside Adolph Zukor . Schulberg's mother was Sam Jaffe's sister .

Schulberg attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire . At the end of the 1930s he wrote scripts for the first time. In 1941 he published the novel What Makes Sammy Run? on the rise and fall of the Jewish boy Sammy Glick. In 1951 Schulberg was called to the Un-American Activities Committee because of his previous membership in the Communist Party. He made himself available to the committee as a witness and named colleagues who were then put on the “ Hollywood blacklist ”. Then began working with Elia Kazan , who had also named names for the blacklist as a witness. For Kazan he wrote the screenplay for The Fist in the Neck and was awarded an Oscar for it. In 1957 another film was made with Kazan: A Face in the Crowd .

Budd Schulberg was married to Betsy Anne Langman since 1978 and had two children with her. Before this marriage, Schulberg was married three times. From 1964 until her death in 1977 he was married to the actress Geraldine Brooks in third marriage.

Schulberg was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003 for his work, which is often about boxing .
