Otto III. from Holland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto III. von Holland († March 27, 1249 ) was Bishop of Utrecht .

The son of Count Wilhelm I of Holland was far more peaceful when he was chosen in 1233 instead of the warlike Willibrand von Oldenkop . His most ardent concern was the repayment of the debts accumulated by the wars of his predecessors and also the improvement of the dikes . With the Drenthe, which Willibrand had never completely succeeded in subjugating, he succeeded in reaching a tolerable agreement, while his nephew, King William of Holland , assisted him in maintaining his power against rebellious vassals in Salland and Drenthe . He had been its guardian for a long time, but without accepting his authority in Holland, and was one of the most zealous collaborators in its elevation to king. Otherwise, even in his tombstone, only his concern for increasing the material prosperity of his monastery and his church is praised, because he is said to have left his church duties almost entirely to his auxiliary bishop .
