Gian Galeazzo Maria Sforza (born June 20, 1469 in Abbiategrasso ; † October 21, 1494 in Pavia ) was nominally the 6th Duke of Milan from 1476 to 1494 . Gian Galeazzo's sudden death at the age of 25 is attributed to the machinations of his uncle Ludovico. In order to come to power, he planned an assassination attempt in which he, supported by his closest friends, murdered Galeazzo with several knife stabs in the head and upper body. The body of the victim is said to have been buried in a church under the altar. On the day of Gian Galeazzo's death, Ludovico claimed the crown of Milan for himself and thus passed Gian Galeazzo's four-year-old son Francesco into the succession. After Ludovico's fall in 1499, Francesco was like this by Louis XII. made it to France, where he later became Abbot of Marmoutier.
