Marià Fortuny , actually Marià Josep Maria Bernat Fortuny i Carbó , also Marià Josep Maria Bernat Fortuny i Marsal , (born  June 11, 1838 in Reus in Catalonia , † November 21, 1874 in Rome ), was a Spanish painter , graphic artist and draftsman as well Eraser .

life and work

Fortuny lost his father when he was young and his mother when he was twelve. He grew up with his grandfather and studied at the Barcelona Academy under Claudio Lorenzález , a student of Friedrich Overbeck . He was inspired by some of Paul Gavarni 's lithographs . In a school competition he won the award and a travel grant to Rome, where he arrived in 1856.

He accompanied General Juan Prim in the Morocco campaign from 1859 to 1860 . Before returning to Rome, he visited Paris, where he met Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier and Jean-Léon Gérôme , and Madrid, where he primarily studied Goya . In 1866 Fortuny had arrived back in Rome and took care of some orders from the Parisian art dealer Goupil , which were noticed at an exhibition in 1869.

The paintings Wedding in the Vicaria of Madrid and The Moroccan Snake Tamer were particularly well known, and his last works include The Arcadians and the Academics . Fortuny also painted histories , such as a large-format allegory for the Church of St. Augustine in Barcelona and a ceiling for the palace of Queen Maria Christina . Apart from various trips to Spain, he stayed in Rome, where he died on October 21, 1874. He left numerous studies, sketches and unfinished paintings, including The Battle of Tangier . Some of his works from the collection of his son Mariano can be seen today in the Palazzo Fortuny in Venice .
