Per-Olof Åstrand

Per-Olof Åstrand ( October 21, 1922 in Svenarums församling , Jönköping län - January 2, 2015 in Täby församling) was a Swedish physiologist and sports scientist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Åstrand also studied sport at the Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan (GCI) with a physical education teacher exam in 1946 and medicine. After graduating in sports, he became a research assistant in the physiology of the Karolinska Institute , where he received his doctorate in 1952. Now he became a lecturer and was professor of exercise physiology at the GCI from 1961 and professor of physiology at the Karolinska Institute from 1977 to 1989. From 1977 to 1988 he was a member of the institute's Nobel Prize selection committee. Åstrand is considered a pioneer and one of the founding fathers of modern work and sport physiology. He has been involved in both competitive sports and exercise therapy of all ages. The Åstrand-Ryhming bicycle ergometer test developed with his wife in 1954 is still in use. His exercise physiology textbook has been translated into eight languages. He has received honorary doctorates from eight universities and was an honorary member of the American College of Cardiology. the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the American College of Sports Medicine. In 2000, Åstrand received the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Exercise Physiologists. (ASEP) awarded.

Initial scientific research

  • He was the first to use muscle biopsies to research the different human capabilities at the level of muscle fibers.
  • He was the first to study the enzyme system, capillary system density, and myoglobin concentration with endurance performance.
