Drikus Veer

Drikus Veer (born July 9, 1918 - October 21, 2011 ) was a Dutch motorcycle racer .

Veer was known as a versatile rider who was successful on the road, on the track , in motocross and in the enduro sector. In his active career from 1937 to 1957, he was known as "de tijger van Borculo" ("the tiger of Borculo ") .

Career

Drikus Veer won his first race at Ell - Hunsel in 1936 on a Francis Barnett in the 125 cc class. This was also his first ever motorcycle race. The following year he won the same race on a Triumph in the quarter liter class. After the Second World War , Veer competed again as a private driver in 1946, primarily in the Dutch championship . In 1949 he won the title in the 500 cc class there on Triumph. In 1951 he won the silver vase with the Dutch national team at the 26th International Six-Day Tour.

In the 1953 season , Drikus Veer made his debut in the motorcycle world championship on a Morini with fifth place in the 125cc race of the Dutch TT in Assen . 1954 he received from the Italian manufacturer Gilera , who was leading at half-liter class at the time, a fast 500 rotary four-cylinder - DOHC -Werksrennmaschinen for the Dutch TT - of course, under the premise that in the race the factory riders Geoff Duke and Reg Armstrong precedence to to let. Veer finished the race in eighth and missed the points.

In 1957, Drikus Veer won the Dutch championship title in the 250 cm³ class at an NSU , after which he ended his active career at the age of 39. Veer died on October 21, 2011 at the age of 93.
