Joachim Friedrich Reinelt (born October 21, 1936 in Neurode , Silesia ) is emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Dresden-Meißen .

Life

After the expulsion from Lower Silesia , Reinelt's family settled in Saxony . He put 1954 in Radeberg the High School from. After a one-year language course in Halle , Joachim Reinelt studied Catholic theology in Erfurt and Neuzelle from 1955 to 1961 . On 29 June 1961 he received by Bishop Otto Spülbeck in St. Peter's Cathedral to Bautzen the priesthood .

He then worked as a chaplain in Gera and Freiberg and from 1964 as a parish jutor in Ebersbach (Saxony) . In 1966 he became a chaplain at the Catholic Court Church in Dresden and worked from 1970 first as parish administrator again in Freiberg and from 1974 to 1986 as pastor in Altenburg . At the same time he was dean in the dean's office of the same name from 1980 to 1986 and in 1986 he was appointed to the episcopal administration of the Dresden-Meißen diocese as a full -time councilor, where he held a leading position as Caritas director .

On January 2, 1988, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Dresden-Meißen. On this occasion Reinelt gave himself the motto "Jesus in medio " ("Jesus in the middle"), a short version of the biblical phrase "Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them" from the Gospel of Matthew ( Mt 18:20  EU ), which also reflects its proximity to the Focolare Movement . The episcopal ordination received Reinelt on 20 February 1988 Bishop Gerhard Schaffran in the Dresden court church ; Co-consecrators were Bishop Bernhard Huhn from Görlitz and Dresden Auxiliary Bishop Georg Weinhold .

Joachim Reinelt was deputy chairman of the commission for societal and social issues and chairman of the commission for charitable issues at the German Bishops' Conference .

On the occasion of his upcoming 75th birthday on October 21, 2011, Joachim Reinelt had Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation for reasons of age according to can. 401 § 1 CIC . As early as April 4, 2011, however, it was announced that the Pope would initially not accept Reinelt's resignation, so that he would continue the office for an initially indefinite period. On February 20, 2012, Benedict XVI. finally the resignation of Joachim Reinelt.

Honors

On May 28, 2011 Reinelt was awarded the Saxon Constitutional Medal by Matthias Rößler, President of the State Parliament of Saxony, as "an important pioneer and companion of the citizens of the GDR who fought for their freedom in autumn 1989 ". On October 15, 2012, the Prime Minister of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich , awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit in recognition of his charitable work .
