David H. Armstrong

David Hartley Armstrong (born October 21, 1812 in Nova Scotia , Canada , †  March 18, 1893 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Missouri in the US Senate .

Life

After attending the Maine Wesleyan Seminary , David Armstrong first worked as a teacher in New Bedford ( Massachusetts ) from 1833 to 1837 . He then lived for a short time in St. Louis and Lebanon ( Illinois ), where he also worked as a teacher. In 1838 he was resident in Missouri again and headed the Benton Public School , which he remained until 1847. He was then until 1850 head of the financial administration ( Comptroller ) of St. Louis and between 1854 and 1858 postmaster of the city. From 1873 to 1876 he sat on the Board of Police Commissioners ; he was also a member of a council of St. Louis landowners.

When US Senator Lewis V. Bogy died on September 20, 1877, David Armstrong was appointed his successor in Congress in Washington . His term of office lasted from September 29 of the same year to January 26, 1879; he did not run for the by-election, which James Shields won . Armstrong was no longer politically active and died in St. Louis in 1893.
