Lars Bo (* May 29, 1924 as Lars Bo Jørgensen in Kolding ; † October 21, 1999 in Paris ) was a Danish draftsman and author . Lars Bo is particularly known for graphic works with fantastic motifs inspired by surrealism .

life and work

Lars Bo worked from 1939 to 1940 for the painter P. Rostrup Bojesen at the State Art Museum in Copenhagen and from 1941 to 1943 he attended the Kunsthåndværkerskolen in Copenhagen. During this time he began to get involved in the resistance movement against the German occupation and was a member of the Odense resistance group in the last year of the war .

After the war he first traveled all over Europe and then settled in Paris. There he initially worked as a draftsman and book illustrator. He was friends with the engraver Albert Flacon and with Johnny Friedlaender , one of the pioneers of modern color etching , who ran a graphic studio in Paris; it was there that his first etchings were made.

Bo became known for his color etchings, of which more than 400 were created after 1959, which were shown in exhibitions in most European countries, America, Japan and Hong Kong. His pictures are in numerous private collections and museums. Inspired by the Scottish landscape, he created a series of etchings in 1983 and 1964 that brought him international recognition. Bo wrote books and illustrated fairy tale editions by Hans Christian Andersen ; for the design of the fairy tale The Snow Queen he was honored with a gold medal in Bratislava in 1969; his edition of The Wanderer was published in 1983 in German translation. In 1977 he received the “1. Prix de la Critique ”and in 1983 an honorary residence from the City of Paris. Pierre Lübecker judged in an article in the Danish newspaper Politiken that his graphics appeal to the imagination "because the world it contains is so varied and because what happens in it cannot be predicted".
