John V (Pope)
John V (* in Syria ; † August 2, 686 in Rome ) was Pope from July 23, 685 until his death.
He came from Syria , possibly Antioch . From 680 he was the papal legate . Because of his knowledge of Greek , he was chosen to take part in the Sixth Ecumenical Council of Constantinople . He took office as Pope on July 23, 685. From Emperor Justinian II he received several favors for the Western Church . He was also able to subjugate the bishops of Sardinia . He died on August 2, 686 in Rome. He is buried in the basilica of St. Peter's Basilica .
