Benedict II
Saint Benedict II (* in Rome ; † May 8, 685 , ibid) was Pope from 683 to 685.
Benedict II came from the Roman family of the Savelli . He was the successor to Leo II , and although he was elected in June 683, he was not consecrated until June 26, 684 because the confirmation of the election by Emperor Constantine IV in Constantinople had to be obtained first.
He successfully sought reconciliation with the ruler of the Byzantine Empire , after the relationship had previously been strained by the monotheletic dispute . In this way he achieved that the election of the future popes could be confirmed by the exarch in Ravenna . He was also able to achieve the lifting of the autocephaly (church independence) of Ravenna. He died in Rome on May 8, 685. This is also his Catholic feast day.
