Varise Connor

Varise Connor (born October 21, 1906 in Lake Arthur / Louisiana , † June 19, 1994 ) was an American fiddle player and one of the early representatives of Cajun music .

Connor grew up in a musical family. His father, who ran a sawmill, was an active fiddle player, and the whole Connor family formed a music band. An older brother played the bass fiddle, a younger guitar, Varise the first and a cousin the second fiddle. In addition to the music of his Irish ancestors, Connor mainly influenced Bascom Mouton , a fiddler popular in Acadiana in the 1920s and 1930s . In the 1930s he gave up his appearances at dance events in favor of concerts, especially with his friend Lionel Leleux . In 1976 he performed on the sidelines of the Festival of American Folk Life in Washington with Leleux and two of his grandchildren. Connor remained largely unknown during his lifetime. Michael Doucet studied his style of music under the NEA Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program and he was honored at the Cajun Music Festival in Lafayette. A CD that Barry Ancelet put together from recordings from the 1970s was only released ten years after his death.
