history

The name Zschillen, first documented as Zsilen in 1174 , is of Slavic origin like the village Altzschillen. The meaning of the place name is either "Bienenort" or "Place des Cila", after the Old Sorbian personal name "Cila". The Zschillen monastery of the Augustinian Canons on the eastern side of the Zwickauer Mulde, founded in 1168 by Count Dedo von Rochlitz-Groitzsch , was named after the place Zschillen on the western bank of the Zwickauer Mulde . After a small town gradually formed around the monastery of Zschillen, the name Altzschillen (1489: "Aldenzschillen") became common for the village on the opposite bank of the Mulden.

Originally the place belonged to the property of the Zschillen monastery. This came in 1543 with the entire property to Duke Moritz von Sachsen , who immediately secularized it and exchanged it for the Lords of Schönburg for the places Hohnstein , Wehlen and Lohmen in today's Saxon Switzerland . That is why the name Wechselburg came up for the place Zschillen and the monastery complex, while Altzschillen has kept its original name to this day. Since the exchange, Altzschillen has been run as an official village of the Schönburg lordship of Wechselburg , which belonged to the lords of Schönburg under Wettin suzerainty. Altzschillen has always been part of the Wechselburg church.

As part of the administrative reorganization of the Kingdom of Saxony, Altzschillen was placed under the administration of the Royal Saxon Office of Rochlitz as part of the Schönburg feudal lordship of Wechselburg in 1835 . In 1856 Altzschillen came to the Rochlitz court office and in 1875 to the newly established Rochlitz District Administration .

As a result of the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the Altzschillen community was incorporated into the Rochlitz district in the Chemnitz district (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ). On May 1, 1967, Altzschillen was incorporated into Wechselburg, with which the place belonged to the Saxon district of Rochlitz since 1990 . This went up in 1994 in the Mittweida district and in 2008 in the central Saxony district.
