Aloys Wilhelm Schreiber (born October 12, 1761 in Bühl (Baden) , † October 21, 1841 in Oos (Baden-Baden) ) was a teacher and professor of aesthetics , court historian , writer and travel book author .

Schreiber was born on October 12, 1761 in Bühl (baptized on the same day in the parish of Kappelwindeck). His father Ignaz Schreiber was a merchant and chairmen of the local Kramerzunfthaus . His mother was Maria Katharina Seuther. Schreiber was the eldest son of nine children. In his childhood, Schreiber attended high school in Baden-Baden . From 1781 studied recorder at the University of Freiburg at the request of his parents theology . In 1784 he took up a teaching position as a professor of aesthetics at his former grammar school, but in 1788 he gave up and became court master and private tutor in the family of Count von Westphalen-Fürstenberg in Mainz , who was Kurmainz Minister of State at the time. In 1790 he traveled with the young count to Strasbourg and the Baltic Sea . In the summer of 1791 Aloys Schreiber made extensive trips along the Rhine. He processed these experiences in numerous travel reports. In 1801 Schreiber took over a teaching position as a professor of classical literature at the Lyceum in Baden-Baden. On January 22, 1804, he wrote to the Elector Karl Friedrich von Baden asking for the chair for aesthetics at the University of Heidelberg , which he held until 1813. In 1807 Schreiber received his doctorate in philosophy . At this time he became friends with Heinrich Voss, the son of Johann Heinrich Voss . In 1809 he was appointed dean of the philosophy faculty in Heidelberg. In 1813, Schreiber became court historian in Karlsruhe, thereby quitting his position in Heidelberg. There he cultivated close friendships with Friedrich Weinbrenner and Johann Peter Hebel . Schreiber retired on September 16, 1825, after which he returned to Oos in 1826, where he died on October 21, 1841.

On February 3, 1787, the marriage between Schreiber and Maria Anna Joubert (1770-1852) took place in Oberöwisheim . The first child, Maria Anna Elisabeth, was born there on February 8, 1788. Aloys Schreiber and his wife had a total of six sons (including the mathematician Guido Schreiber ) and one daughter. Three of his children died in infancy.

Works

Aloys Schreiber was active in literature throughout his life. He was active as a writer, collected songs and published magazines. He tried a wide variety of genres. As a poet and playwright, Schreiber could not convince, although he is considered gifted and talented, if not a genius. Schreiber was able to translate his broad knowledge into non-fiction books. He was able to present the topics clearly. The travelogues along the Rhine and its surroundings were particularly successful. In 1806 the book Picturesque Views of the Rhine from Mainz to Düsseldorf was published , and a year later the French translation Voyage pittoresque sur le Rhin depuis Mayence jusqu'à Düsseldorf followed . Travelers enjoyed reading these books. Therefore, these works are considered a forerunner of Karl Baedeker's travel guides with cultural and historical value. Other important works related to the history of Germany and especially Baden. He also collected stories and sagas and published them.
