José Hernández (poet)
José Rafael Hernández y Pueyrredón (born November 10, 1834 in Villa Ballester near San Martín in the province of Buenos Aires , Argentina ; † October 21, 1886 in Belgrano , then a suburb of Buenos Aires) was an Argentine journalist and poet . His most famous work is the epic poem El gaucho Martín Fierro (The Gaucho Martin Fierro) from 1872.
Life
Hernández, whose ancestors came from Spain , Ireland and France , was born on the Chacra Pueyrredón farm, now part of Villa Ballester, near San Martín (now a suburb of Buenos Aires). His father was a mayordomo (foreman) on a number of cattle farms and thus Hernández lived the slightly privileged life of a young gaucho . His mother was a cousin of Juan Martín de Pueyrredón .
Hernández fought on the side of the federalists during the civil wars of Argentina and Uruguay and later worked as a journalist, (briefly) as an employee of a company and for a while as a stenographer for the legislature of the Argentine Confederation .
In 1856, Hernández became a member of the Partido Federal Reformista , which wanted the independent Buenos Aires to be incorporated into the Argentine Confederation.
Hernández founded the newspaper El Río de la Plata , which campaigned for autonomous communities, the abolition of compulsory border contingents (? In the original: contingentes de fronteras ) and for the election of justices of the peace , military commanders and school councils. He was against immigration because he believed it would jeopardize the region's prosperity.
Although he was a federalist who opposed centralization, modernization and the Europeanization tendencies of President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento , Hernández did not defend General Juan Manuel de Rosas , whom he characterized as a tyrant and despot .
Today Hernández is known almost exclusively for his masterpiece and Argentine national epic El Gaucho Martín Fierro ; an epic poem considered the pinnacle of gaucho literature. He began the poem during his exile in Brazil after the defeat at Ñaembé (1870) and published it in two parts in 1872 and 1879. Hernández died of a heart condition in Belgrano, then a suburb of Buenos Aires, now a rich district of the autonomous city of Buenos Aires Aires . In Argentina, the Antarctic island of Isla José Hernández is named after him.
