Daniel Akerson (born October 21, 1948 in California ) is an American manager .

Life

Akerson grew up in Mankato , Minnesota . From 1970 to 1975 he worked as a naval officer. He studied engineering at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis , Maryland and the London School of Economics .

After completing his studies, Akerson worked for MCI Communications from 1983 . In 1993 he moved to the US semiconductor manufacturer General Instrument , where he followed Donald Rumsfeld . In 1996 Akerson was named CEO of Nextel . From 1996 he worked at Nextlink Communications (later renamed XO Communications ). In 2003 he moved to the Carlyle Group .

Akerson was the successor to Edward Whitacre since September 1, 2010 CEO and since January 1, 2011 Chairman of the US company General Motors . In January 2014, Mary Barra Akerson succeeded him.

Akerson is married with three children. He lives with his family in McLean , Virginia .
