Ludwig Arzt (born June 28, 1873 in Michelstadt ; † October 21, 1956 there ) was a German entrepreneur.

Career

Ludwig Arzt came from the Michelstädter family of cloth makers. His grandfather Philipp Ludwig Arzt (1799–1875) founded the Ph. Ludwig Arzt cloth factory in Stockheim in 1828 and his father Michael Arzt (1841–1911) expanded the company. Ludwig Arzt was the eldest son of Michael Arzt and his wife Marie Doktor geb. May (1852-1921). The younger brother Heinrich (1874–1947) followed. In 1901 the two brothers Ludwig and Heinrich Arzt took over the management of the family business and continued to run it successfully. The economic success of the cloth factory was also a result of the production of uniform fabrics, especially in the 1870s, during the First and Second World Wars.

Ludwig Arzt was also chairman of the supervisory board of the iron foundry and machine works Michelstadt AG and the Veithwerke AG in Sandbach im Odenwald. He was also a member of the supervisory board of Hermann Moos AG in Buchau am Federsee and the Darmstadt Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Ludwig Arzt was known for his social streak and for supporting associations and the church in his hometown. On the occasion of the company's 100th anniversary in 1928, he was made an honorary citizen of Michelstadt.

Ludwig Arzt was a military economist during the National Socialist era. There was a prisoner-of-war camp on the factory premises. The prisoners of war were used as slave labor in the cloth factory.

For the further development of the textile industry he was appointed honorary senator by the TH Darmstadt in 1953 .

Ludwig Arzt was married to Elise Weber (1874–1949). The son Ludwig Arzt jun. as well as the daughter Marie Mathilde Doktor emerged. Ludwig doctor jun. fell in World War II in 1942.
