Paola Piazzolla (born October 21, 1996 in Canosa di Puglia ) is an Italian rower . In 2017 she won the gold medal for Italy in the lightweight double sculls at the World Rowing Championships .
Career
Paola Piazzolla started rowing in 2010 and competed for the first time in her career at the Junior World Rowing Championships in 2013 . Together with Arianna Mazzoni she formed the Italian double scull. Together they reached the A-final in Trakai , in which they finished sixth and last. The following year, Piazzolla again competed in the Junior Rowing World Championships and this time formed the Italian double scull with Bianca Laura Pelloni . They qualified for the A final in Hamburg and finished the race in fifth place.
In 2015 she took part in the U23 rowing world championships in Plovdiv as a substitute woman and replaced Veronica Calabrese in the B-final run in two without helmsman. Together with Ilaria Broggini , she took first place in the B final and so the Italian two-man without a helmsman finally took seventh place. The following year she took part in the U23 rowing world championships in Rotterdam as part of the regular crew of the lightweight double foursome . Next to her, the boat was Asja Maregotto , Allegra Francalacci and Giorgia Lo Bue . Together they qualified for the A-final and secured the gold medal in front of the Swiss and German boats.
The following year, she again competed with Asja Maregotto in the lightweight double sculls at the U23 World Rowing Championships in 2017 . In Plovdiv , Valentina Rodini and Giovanna Schettino were also part of the cast of the Italian lightweight double foursome . In the run-up they qualified for the A final and there they secured the gold medal again in front of the Dutch and German boats. As U23 world champions, they also competed together near Sarasota and Bradenton at the 2017 World Rowing Championships and were able to qualify for the final right in the run-up. There they prevailed against the Australian and Chinese boats and became world champions.
In 2018, Paola Piazzolla competed for the last time in her career at the U23 World Rowing Championships in 2018 . In Poznan, together with Giulia Mignemi , Allegra Francalacci and Arianna Noseda, they formed the Italian lightweight four-four . After she was able to qualify for the A-final in her preliminary run, the competition ended for Piazzolla with the third gold medal at a U23 rowing world championship . The U23 world champions started together at the 2018 World Championships in Plovdiv and reached the A-final, in which they finished sixth and last.
In 2019 she competed in the lightweight single and made her debut at the Rowing World Cup in Poznan . She qualified for the A-final and finished the competition in fifth place. In the lightweight single, she also took part in the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Linz for Italy . There she missed the A final and only reached the B final, which she finished in sixth place. In the end, she finished the competition in twelfth place.
