Cleveland Abbe

Cleveland Abbe (born December 3, 1838 in New York City , NY , USA , † October 28, 1916 in Chevy Chase , Maryland ) was an American astronomer and first meteorologist , who is considered the father of the US Weather Bureau .

Life

Abbe, trained as an astronomer, took a senior position at the Cincinnati Observatory in Ohio in 1868 . From September 1, 1869, Abbe issued private weather bulletins covering the Cincinnati area . On February 9, 1870, the United States Congress authorized the Weather Service . Abbe was the only person in the United States at the time who had any experience of making weather maps from telegraphic reports. He was therefore offered an important position in the new authority, which he also accepted on January 3, 1871. He was often the official weather forecaster and strong advocate of time zones on Earth .

Since 1871 he was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society . In 1879 Abbe was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , in 1884 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . And on January 13, 1888, he was a founding member of the National Geographic Society . He was a member of the Astronomical Society .
