John Hollander
John Hollander (born October 28, 1929 in New York City , † August 17, 2013 in Branford / Connecticut ) was an American poet.
biography
Hollander studied at Columbia University and Indiana University and was a Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University from 1954 to 1957 . After two years at Connecticut College , he taught at Yale University from 1959 , most recently as Sterling Professor emeritus . He also served from 1966 to 1977 professor at Hunter College of the City University of New York .
His first volume of poetry, A Crackling of Thorns , won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award . In total, he published more than a dozen volumes of poetry. In addition, he wrote several works on literary theory and published works by authors as diverse as Ben Jonson and Dante Gabriel Rossetti . His two-volume anthology American Poetry: The Nineteenth Century , published in 1994, found great acclaim . With Robert Hass , Carolyn Kizer , Nathaniel Mackey and Marjorie Perloff , he developed the supplementary volume American Poetry: The Twentieth Century (2000). He was a co-founder of the Association of Literary Scholars, Critics, and Writers .
Hollander also emerged as a children's book author and worked with composers such as Milton Babbitt , George Perle and Hugo Weisgall . He was u. a. with the Bollingen Prize for Poetry (1983, with Anthony Hecht ), the Levinson Prize and the Shaughnessy Medal of the Modern Language Association and was a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation , the MacArthur Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts . In 1974 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and 1979 to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
