- February 7th : Leo I becomes Eastern Roman Emperor as successor to Markian . The native Thracian founded the Thracian dynasty . He is the first emperor to be crowned by the Patriarch of Constantinople .
Western Roman Empire
- April 1st : Majorian , with the help of Ricimer , becomes Western Roman Emperor as the successor to the murdered Avitus .
