• Attila , King of the Huns and leader of an extensive tribal coalition, led a huge army to Italy the following year after the battle of the Catalaunian fields ( 451 ); Aquileia is destroyed, Padua , Bergamo , Brescia , Novara , Milan and Pavia are conquered, Emperor Valentinian III. flees from his residence in Ravenna to Rome. Although Attila is dissuaded from attacking Rome by Pope Leo the Great without a sword blow, it is still believed that he set off large streams of refugees as he marched through. According to tradition, the founding of Venice can also be traced back to the Huns storm, from which people took refuge in the lagoons.
