- April 7th : The Huns conquer Metz , a little later they reach Orléans .
- Summer: In the battle on the Catalaunian fields , the Huns under Attila are repulsed by the Western Roman general Flavius Aëtius and the Visigoths . The Visigoth king Theodoric I falls, his successor is Thorismund .
Persian Empire
- May 26 : King Yazdegerd II of Persia defeats the Armenian army in the Battle of Avarayr in what is now West Azerbaijan . After the victory, Yazdegerd imprisoned many Armenian priests and noblemen, but continues to face Armenian resistance.

- October 8 to November 1 : Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon : The Monophysite resolutions of the “ Synod of Robbers ” of 449 are declared invalid. Confirmation of the Nicene Creed . Pope Leo I is given priority over the Patriarch of Constantinople .
