Hilde Kaufmann

Hilde Kaufmann (born October 28, 1920 in Werne ; † January 11, 1981 in Cologne ) was a German legal scholar and criminologist .

Hilde Kaufmann was the first of four children of a teacher couple. She graduated from high school in 1939 with distinction. She had to interrupt a law degree that she had begun in 1943 because of her commitment to the armaments industry , but was able to continue it from 1945 at the University of Bonn and complete her first state examination in 1948 . After her doctorate (1950) and the second state examination in law (1952) she entered the judiciary ( public prosecutor's office in Bonn). In 1953 she switched to the Foreign Office as an assistant in the International Mercy Committee for War Criminals . From 1956 to 1961 Hilde Kaufmann was a research assistant and at the law and political science faculty of the University of Bonn, where she qualified as a professor in 1961 . At the same institute she worked first as a private lecturer (1962–1966), then as an adjunct professor (1966). From 1966 to 1970 Kaufmann was a professor at the University of Kiel , from 1970 until her death then professor and director of the criminological research center at the University of Cologne . Here she was the first woman ever to serve as dean of the law faculty in 1977/78. She died of a stroke on the evening of January 11, 1981 in Cologne. Her grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. R).

Her main scientific concern was to align criminology with the needs of criminal law and the administration of justice .
