Valderøya is an island in the western Norwegian municipality of Giske , near the city of Ålesund , in the province of Møre og Romsdal .
Valderøya is with 3,126 inhabitants (2007) the most populous island in the municipality. The administrative center of the municipality of Giske is located in the village of Valderhaug . The mountainous island has an area of 6.5 km²; highest mountain is the 231 m high signals .
Valderøya is connected to the northern island of Vigra by a bridge. In the east, the Valderøy tunnel connects the island with Ellingsøya and Ålesund . There is a speedboat connection between Hareid , Valderøya and Ålesund, which, coupled with bus connections, connects Ålesund / Vigra Airport to local public transport in the region.
On Valderøya, the remains of a boat from the Bronze Age were found in a barrow . The boat, made of spruce wood and dated between 240 and 420 AD, is considered the oldest boat find in Norway. ( see also : History of Viking Shipbuilding )
