Spiridon Neven DuMont

Spiridon Neven DuMont , maiden name Markus Alfred Neven DuMont (born March 3, 1967 in Cologne ; † October 28, 1995 ), was a German photographer , video artist and painter .

Life

Markus Neven DuMont was born as the eldest son of the publisher Alfred Neven DuMont and his wife Hedwig (née von Auersperg) on ​​March 3, 1967 in Cologne. After graduating from school, he did a three-month internship with the New York photographer Nancy Rudolph in 1986 .

In 1987 he began to study philosophy and political science at the University of Cologne . Contrary to family tradition, he began to be increasingly interested in photography and painting. In 1988 he completed a five-month construction art internship in Galisteo, New Mexico . In the following year he went to Munich as an assistant in Michael Friedel's photo studio . As his first extensive, independent work, he created a video and photo diary of a sailing trip from the Grand Cayman Islands to the Mediterranean in 1990 . In the same year he exhibited his works in the Munich Art and Communication Gallery and in the Bauhaus Café in Cologne.

In 1991 he worked with the composer Simon Stockhausen on the art project The Approach of Images and Sounds . During this time he began with cross-genre collages , photo and video experiments. His studies also included attending a seminar for expressive dance and attempts at video editing by the choreographer Keriac in San Francisco in 1992. On November 16, 1992, the art project A Kind of Communication - The Approach of Image was performed in the Senftöpfchen Theater in Cologne and sound instead. At the same time he worked on the painting series Space in Space in 1992 . Neven DuMont worked on his film project Movement in Landscapes from Gray to Tropical Green in the winter of 1992/1993 in Germany, Belize and Spain . In 1993 he continued the video work on the subject of expressive dance and the videos Movement I to V. At the same time, he began work on the painting and video cycle Space in Space , which ended in 1994.

In 1995 he continued his work on collages and experimented on an artistic symbiosis between computer photography and painting. In that year he completed the cycle of lightness of being . In September 1995 he began studying at the Art Academy for Media in Cologne. In autumn 1995, works by Spiridon Neven DuMont were shown in a solo exhibition in the Marble Palace of the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg . The exhibition was curated by Karl Ruhrberg .

Having become addicted to drugs, Spiridon Neven DuMont died in 1995 at the age of 28 and was buried in Cologne's Melaten cemetery (MA to corridor 69). Despite an artistic creative period of only five years, he left behind an extensive oeuvre of photography, drawing, painting and cross-genre collages.

In 1998 his parents Alfred and Hedwig Neven DuMont donated the Spiridon Neven DuMont Prize for outstanding artistic achievements at the Cologne Art Academy for Media as a souvenir of their son .

After his death, his works were shown in retrospectives in Tübingen , Bielefeld and Halle .
