Iringa
Iringa is a city in the middle of Tanzania in East Africa , south of the capital Dodoma . This is also the name of the Iringa region and the two county-like districts of Iringa Urban and Iringa Rural . Iringa is on the A104 main road, which connects the capital Dodoma with the border with Zambia . In addition, the A7 branches off in the south of Iringa towards Dar es Salaam .
The name of the city is derived from the word lilinga from the Hehe language , which means something like " fortress " or " fort " in German. In the 1890s the headquarters and fortress of Chief Mkwawa , who fought as a local against the German colonial power , stood near this town in the village of Kalenga .
Iringa is home to several universities.
In Iringa there is an old German market hall from colonial times; the courthouse also dates from this era. From the Gangilonga ( Kihehe , German: "speaking stone") you can see the city.
Many German volunteers do social services in Iringa. These young Germans are sent out, for example, by the diocese of Münster , the Amani-Kinderdorf e. V. from the Berliner Missionswerk and the Caritas Association for the Diocese of Hildesheim.
