Gerhard Gregor
Gerhard Gregor (born September 17, 1906 in Ruß, Memelland (now Rusnė , Lithuania ), † October 28, 1981 in Hamburg ) was a German organist and pianist . He is considered one of the most important German organists of the last century.
Life
Gregor studied church music from 1925 to 1928 at the State Academy for School and Church Music in Berlin-Charlottenburg . Fascinated by the possibilities of the big cinema organs of the silent film era, he took a job as a cinema organist in Hanover after completing his studies and soon made a name for himself as a silent film musician.
His skills led him to NORAG in Hamburg in 1930 , when a cinema organ made by M. Welte & Söhne , optimized for radio transmission, was installed in their studios . Before, during and after the Second World War, he made a name for himself as a great organist on this instrument , known as the “radio organ” , who possessed the ability, unique for broadcasting purposes, to be able to play the right music for a wide variety of occasions. His repertoire included both classical and modern entertainment and dance music . He promoted the Hammond organ as well as other modern forms of organ playing and proved to be just as convincing pianist as a virtuoso of the harpsichord . After the Second World War, Gregor worked for the NWDR and after its split with the NDR . Numerous recordings of Gregor have been preserved and some of them have been published on CD.
Gregor's grave is located in the Hamburg cemetery in Ohlsdorf .
