Harold Brown (pianist)

Harold Douglas Brown (born October 28, 1917 in Wynyard / Saskatchewan , † January 4, 2011 in Burnaby , British Columbia ) was a Canadian pianist .

Life

Brown studied from 1936 in Vancouver with JDA Tripp , Barbara Custance , Phyllis Schuldt and Hugh Bancroft . He became known as a chamber musician, performing with the Cassenti Players in the 1950s and performing frequently with the CBC . He has worked as a piano accompanist for the British Columbia Music Festival , the Theater under the Starts (1958–63), the Vancouver Opera (1960–70) and the Banff Center for the Arts (1972–90). From 1964 to 1967 he was the pianist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra . From 1973 to 1990 he was musical director of the Unitarian Church of Vancouver .

He played u. a. the world premieres of Robert Turner's Diversities for violin, bassoon and piano (with Arthur Polson and George Zukerman ), Murray Adaskins Cassenti Concertante (with the Cassenti Players ), Barbara Pentland's Soong Songs (with Winona Denyes ) and Jean Coulthard's Sonatina for bassoon and piano ( with George Zukerman) and joined a. a. with John Alexander , Donald Bell , Judith Forst , Alan Monk , Arthur Polson, Marie Schilder , Bernard Turgeon and Lyn Vernon . Since the mid-1970s, he was also a sought-after song accompanist.
