Leutfrid Signer

Leutfrid Signer , baptismal name: Emil Signer OFMCap (born October 28, 1897 in Appenzell ; † May 6, 1963 in Stans ) was a Swiss Capuchin clergyman and educator .

Life

Leutfrid Signer was the son of Josef Anton Signer (1860–1904) , witness (responsible supervisor for the military equipment and ammunition stored in armories as well as for the armory ) of the Innerrhoder military depot and president of the rifle club of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden and his wife Franziska Josefa, born . Moser.

He attended primary school and the St. Antonius grammar school in Appenzell and the St. Fidelis college in Stans, which he finished in 1917 with the Matura .

In 1917 he entered the Capuchin Order in Lucerne , There he was, according to his theology studies in Sion , Friborg , Solothurn and Stans, 1924 by Bishop Marius Besson , the ordination .

From 1924 to 1928 he studied humanities with a focus on German literature at the University of Freiburg and received his doctorate in 1933 with a thesis on the German baroque preacher Michael Angelus Schorno (1631–1712), for which he received the award summa cum laude .

In 1927 he became a grammar school teacher for German language and literature at the College of St. Fidelis in Stans, in 1935 Prefect of the Lyceum and in 1943 Rector of the College. In 1956/57 the new building and renovation with a large sports hall at the college took place under his leadership. He was also the inspirer and creator of the college magazine Stanser Student , which contains articles on art and cultural history, mainly from Nidwalden . He also initiated the erection of a monument for Melchior Lussi at the Capuchin monastery.

During the Second World War he introduced the adult education center in Nidwalden and opened the first meetings of the ecumenical movement in Switzerland under the direction of Otto Karrer .

From 1949 to 1953 he was the representative of the rectors of the Catholic secondary schools on the University Council of the University of Freiburg and until his death he was a member of the board of the Freiburg University Association; he was also President of the Academy of Rhetorics and Marian Sodality .

In December 1961 he gave the laudatory speech when his friend Jakob Wyrsch was presented with the Swiss Culture Prize.

Act

Leutfrid Signer was the editor of school books on German literature and reading books for Swiss schools as well as the author of numerous articles on art, culture and the church as well as many reviews in various magazines and articles, mainly of literary content.

As a delegate of the Federal Council , he was represented on the supervisory board of the Swiss Schiller Foundation and he was appointed to the Federal Matura Commission, which deals with issues relating to high school maturity and maturity recognition
