Adley Hogan Gladden
Adley Hogan Gladden (* 28. October 1810 in Fairfield District , South Carolina ; † 12. April 1862 after the Battle of Shiloh ) was a Brigadier General of the Army of the Confederate States of America in the American Civil War .
Life
After moving to Columbia , Ohio , Gladden began trading in cotton and was later appointed postmaster by President Taylor . During the American-Mexican War he served as Major and Lieutenant Colonel in the Palimetto Regiment. He was wounded in the Battle of Belen Gate .
After the war, Gladden moved to New Orleans , Louisiana . In 1861 he took command of the 1st South Carolina Regiment as a lieutenant colonel, and a little later he was transferred to the 1st Louisiana Regulars and promoted to colonel . After the Battle of Pensacola , Gladden rose to the rank of Brigadier General on October 30, 1861. In the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862, a shrapnel hit him , whereupon his arm was amputated in the field hospital . Six days later, Adley Hogan Gladden succumbed to the consequences of this injury. His grave is in Magnolia Cemetery in Mobile , Alabama .
